Full Service Pet Store at Ashland Pets
It’s been a long time since Ashland has had a full service pet store, and when owners Julie Klein and Ron Greene opened Ashland Pets in the Ashland Shopping Center in May 2005, they wanted to make sure it was done right.
Julie and Ron both have biology backgrounds, and they strive to house and sell only happy, well-cared for pets that are given the best food and roomiest quarters possible.
“We are both biologists, and we specialize in advice on animal care,” Ron said. “While there’s a lot known about animal care and nutrition, especially cats and dogs, the amount not known is vast. We are committed to being on the cutting edge of providing the best food and supplies for not only our exotic animals but also for cats and dogs.”
Ron’s background is in biology, chemistry and physics, with an emphasis on ecology, cell biology and comparative biology as it relates to habitat, behavior and nutrition. Julie got her degree in animal science and animal husbandry and had worked for years in California and West Virginia as a vet tech.
“We were living in West Virginia and wanted to move back west,” said Julie, who also teaches math/science in Talent and Phoenix. “I wanted to move back to Washington and Ron to California. We couldn’t agree, so Ron got the map out and picked Ashland because it was in between both. We made the move in 2002 and opened the store in 2005.”
The store carries a wide variety of animals as pets, including a vast collection of birds that includes canaries, finches, lovebirds, cockatiels, parakeets, Quaker parrots, and African grey parrots.
There are also lots of small and exotic pets, from hedgehogs and bunnies to lizards, snakes, turtles, puppies, kittens, rodents, and a good selection of fish. Food and accessories are also part of the inventory.
“We continually analyze each product we sell to insure the best care, and we will not hesitate to drop a product or even an entire manufacturer if we aren’t satisfied it provides what’s in the best interest of the animal,” Ron said. “We refuse to make a profit by selling substandard animals, food or supplies.”
Julie agreed. “We only buy captive-bred reptiles and believe wild catch should be banned,” she said. “Many species in the pet trade are endangered in other countries, and the trade is cruel and kills more animals than those that find homes. We also support local, family raised animals, like puppies, rabbits, birds, hamsters, etc.”
